The Economic Contribution of the Voluntary and Community Sector to the Economy of the North West

This is the first report of its kind in the North West outlining the contribution of the voluntary and community sector to the economy of the region.

The report includes the size of the sector, both in terms of organisations and people employed both paid and as volunteers.   It also includes information about the monetary value of the sector both in terms of turnover and contribution to the economy.

The consultants faced considerable challenges in measuring accurately the number of organisations operating in the region and the data regarding this should be seen as an under estimate.

Key highlights for the sector in the region are

  • it is bigger than the Banking and Finance sector
  • it employs more people than the Manufacturing sector
  • it contributes £9bn to the regional economy

The Report was commissioned by Voluntary Sector North West with funding from Change Up.   Thanks go to the Steering Group which drew up the brief for the work.  It included Pernille Kousgaard (NWDA), Dr. Sylvia Sham (Wai Yin Chinese Womens Society), and John Hannen (GMCVO).

The research was undertaken by the consultants Hoshin.

An abridged version of the above report is now available for download.   This abridged version includes all the key statistics about the size of the sector and its economic contribution, but does not include the detailed methodology, case studies, survey forms, etc.   A fuller version including all this additional information will be available in the near future.

The Health White Paper Consultation

CONSULTATION FULLY BOOKED

The White Paper on Health has the potential to create one of the biggest changes to the structure and function of the NHS since its creation in 1948. Within the White Paper there are 5 consultations which are all open until early October. Although the ‘what’ in the White Paper has largely been decided, the ‘how’ is very much still being shaped.
