Prosperous places: sub national review consultation

20 June 2008

The sub national review consultation — linked to the phasing out of the regional assembly and development of a single, integrated regional strategy - closed on 20 June 2008. VSNW's response outlined the following.

VSNW supports the notion of a single integrated regional strategy.

Within that context, we would seek to ensure that the full capabilities of the region are engaged in building economic growth that is substantive and sustainable; it should:

  • include a broad partnership of all three sectors, including the voluntary and community sector (VCS), at regional, sub-regional and local level
  • promote quality of life for all — this should be included as an objective of the regional strategy
  • be environmentally sustainable.

We agree and believe that:

“[the third sector is] a driver of …opportunity and prosperity”

The Rt. Hon. John Hutton MP, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform, 13 March 2008

We believe this should be fully reflected in future regional, sub-regional and local arrangements.

VSNW's response makes further, specific recommendations. Of particular note are the seven recommendations (pp 3-4) concerning VCS capacity to support a regional, economically focussed strategy.
