Key Note Speaker: Roberta Blackman-Woods MP, Shadow Civil Society Minister
Roberta Blackman-Woods MP is proud and privileged to represent the City of Durham in Parliament. Before being elected as the Labour Member of Parliament for the City of Durham in 2005 she was a university professor in social policy and had previously served as a local councillor.
She was re-elected as the Member of Parliament for the City of Durham in 2010.
Roberta’s interests in Parliament are housing, planning, international development, foreign affairs and regeneration. She founded and chairs the All-Party Balanced and Sustainable Communities Group and is a Co-Chair of the Associate Parliamentary Group for Afghanistan and the All-Party Universities Group.
In Durham she works with local people to highlight the importance of planning and housing policies to the City, with the new unitary council to sensitively regenerate the City Centre and surrounding villages, and with the local NHS trust for the best health services for the area.
In October 2010 the MP was appointed Shadow Minister for Civil Society in the Cabinet Office team covering charities, volunteering and social enterprise. She has previously served as Shadow Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills covering regional policy and economic development, PPS to the Higher Education Minister and PPS to the Secretary of State for Defence and PPS to the Duchy of Lancaster and Cabinet Office Minister.
She has served on the following Select Committees: Education and Skills, Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills, Science and Technology and Statutory Instruments.
Roberta is married with one daughter.
Kevin Curley
Kevin was appointed Chief Executive of NAVCA in January 2003. NAVCA champions and strengthens voluntary and community action by supporting its members in their work with over 160,000 local charities and community groups. Kevin has extensive experience of local voluntary sector support and development organisations, having led CVS in Derby, Hull and Leicestershire. His previous experience also includes overseas development work with VSO, as a Programme Director in Vietnam and Tanzania. Between 1998-2001, he was the Chief Executive of Headway, the UK health charity for people with head injuries. He has also worked for Hull City Council as the Healthy Cities Co-ordinator.
Kevin was a member of the Treasury independent challenge group for the spending review 2010. He has also been a member of both the Treasury third sector review group and the Cabinet Office public services action plan steering group. Kevin lives with his family in Derbyshire and chairs both a family support charity in Yorkshire and a Kenyan development charity.
Richard Caulfield
Richard is the Chief Executive of Voluntary Sector North West.
Born and raised in York, he worked in the insurance industry before studying Psychology and Sociology at what is now Liverpool Hope University. After graduating Richard served two years as an elected sabbatical before moving to London to work for Community Service Volunteers. Richard moved to Manchester in 1997 working initially for Trafford CVS and then the National Union of Students where he was Manager of the Regions and Development. Richard then returned to the CVS movement as Chief Officer at Salford CVS before moving to UniServity, a software company, as Director of Not-for-Profit. Richard became Chief Executive at Voluntary Sector North West (VSNW) in 2008. He is currently Vice-Chair of Governors at Old Trafford Community School, a board member of Manchester Community Information Network and a Trustee of Manchester Met Students’ Union.
Debra Allcock Tyler
Since 2001, Debra has been the Chief Executive of the Directory of Social Change, which works towards an independent voluntary sector at the heart of social change. She is a member of the Charity Commission's SORP Committee, Chair of the Small Charities Coalition and a member of the Advisory Panel for the MSc in Voluntary Sector Management at Cass Business School, City University.
She is an internationally published author of several books covering topics such as leadership, management, communication skills, personal development and time management, and writes a regular column for Third Sector Magazine.
