Lord Speaker visits North West Youth Club
7 December 2011
Baroness D’Souza was greeted by Johnny Biggs from Whitemoss Youth Club and Mike Wild from Manchester Alliance for Community Care (MACC). Baroness D'Souza then addressed an audience of local community members and representatives of the VCS about the constitutional and everyday role the House of Lords plays in the legislative procedures of the UK Parliament.
Martin Preston, VSNW's Representation Project Manager said "The Lord Speaker's visit was very well received and Baroness D'Souza made it clear that she is fully committed to making the House of Lords more accessible to the VCS and to the wider community".
The Lord Speaker is a role elected internally by Members of the House of Lords. Politically impartial, responsibilities of the Lord Speaker include chairing the Lords debating chamber, offering advice on procedure and acting as an ambassador for the work of the Lords both at home and abroad. Baroness D'Souza was elected the new Lords Speaker in September 2011, succeeding Baroness Hayman.
The event was jointly arranged and managed by the Parliamentary Outreach Service, MACC and VSNW.
