Two NW Volunteer Centres benefit from new Lottery funding

11 August 2011

The Volunteer Centres in Liverpool and Pennine Lancashire will each receive £100,000 over the next three years to help recession-hit communities through supporting volunteering.

The funding is part of a £1.9 million contract awarded by the Big Lottery Fund to Volunteering England to work with 15 volunteering centres nationally to tackle the longer-term effects on communities hardest hit by cutbacks.

Volunteering England has identified that to help organisations it is important to act on and respond to the situations of local communities rather than focus on national trends. The project will look to use volunteering to engage those hardest to reach and furthest from the job market to assist them in utilising their skills and talents to help their local communities.

The learnings from the 15 volunteer centres will be evaluated and assessed through the Institute of Volunteering Research and Birkbeck, University of London by exploring the role volunteering can play in helping communities to cope with the recession and public spending cuts. Emphasis will be placed on the impact of long term volunteering for individuals in relations to employment and responding to the challenges faced by the recession.

The 15 Volunteer Centres will be based in:
► Cornwall
► Bristol
► Exeter and North Devon
► Oxfordshire
► Sutton
► Camden
► Islington
► Hertfordshire
► South Lincolnshire
► Nottingham
► Sheffield
► Staffordshire
► Liverpool
► County Durham
► Pennine Lancashire (the local authority districts of Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle, Ribble Valley and Rossendale)

The grant to Volunteering England was made as part of Big Lottery Fund’s solicitation process.
