What will Community Organisers look like?
8 September 2010
The recent Big Society Conference organised by the North West Community Activists' Network (NWCAN) and Tenants & Residents Association (NWTRA), attracted more than 100 attendees, as well as a waiting list twice as long.
Neil Smith, Cabinet Office lead on the Community Organisers and Communities First programmes, delivered a presentation on the plans for Community Organisers to the Big Society Conference.
The presentation explains:
► that the objective of the programme is to create higher levels of community action in order to build strong communities and networks, and to help citizens develop skills and resources;
► that 5000 independent community organisers will be trained over the lifetime of this parliament, and the established model will be for them to be self-sustaining.
► that there will be a particular focus on Community First areas, 100 places that will be identified as having the highest deprivation and lowest social capital. There will be grants connected to this.
► that the funding available for both projects is subject to the outcome of the Comprehensive Spending Review.
Maxine Moar from Oldham Council, who is seconded to the Home Office to implement the 12 Neighbourhood Agreement pilots across England on behalf of CLG/Home Office) and Bernard Davies (National Coalition for Independent Action) also delivered this presentation explaining the roll-out of the project and lessons learned so far.
Due to the popularity of the conference, another event will be held this November (details to be confirmed).
