Are you the one to trust?

27 July 2010

The Big Lottery Fund in England is investing up to £200 million in 100 – 150 urban and rural neighbourhoods that have been overlooked for funding. The funding is to set up an independent charitable Trust that will support local funding schemes in the targeted neighbourhoods.

The initial 50 areas for investment have been chosen, including the following in the North West:
► Ewanrigg, Allerdale, Cumbria
► Barrow Island, Barrow-in Furness, Cumbria
► Shadsworth with Whitebirk, Blackburn, Lancashire
► Rudheath and Witton, Cheshire
► Kirkby Northwood, Knowsley, Greater Merseyside
► Clubmoor, Liverpool
► Clarkesfield/Greenacres/Littlemoor, Oldham
► Little Hulton, Salford
► Leigh West, Wigan

The local funding schemes will enable people to make their communities better places to live in, now and in the future, by helping them develop the skills and confidence they need to identify priorities that matter to them and to take action to change things for the better.

Applications are being sought to run the Big Local Trust in these areas, with up to ten years to allocate the Trust's endowment. The Lottery wants to support a partnership that will:
► manage the Trust’s endowment
► distribute it through local funding schemes
► help them to share learning and effective practice among themselves
► promote the programme’s achievements and lessons to policy makers, funders and neighbourhoods.

Wehil the lead partner must be a voluntary or community organisation, partnerships may include private and statutory organisations, with cross-sectoral working strongly encouraged.

Big Lottery Fund funding should be distinct from Government funding and add value. This programme will not subsidise current or planned services that are normally supported through statutory sources of funding.

For more information and detailed guidance notes on how to apply, visit the Big Lottery's website.
