Big Society, Localism and the BME Third Sector

23 July 2010

One North West, the regional BME network, has produced a short briefing, Big Society, Localism and the BME Third Sector, raising concerns that the shift of power from Westminster to local people might impact disproportionately on the BME sector and communities throughout the North West.

The briefing states that while Big Society involves plans for increased involvement in the running of public services by voluntary and private sector organisations, it might also signal an end to BME groups being treated as 'specific interest' groups. It also observes that no central principles of equality are included in the structural reform plans and highlights that for many people, community goes beyond the neighbourhood level, particularly when it comes to equalities.

You can respond to the briefing at www.surveymonkey.com/s/Big_Society_and_BME  by August 10. The responses will be used by 1NW to develop a strong BME North West-based response to the coalition government and lobby for greater race equality before the Comprehensive Spending Review in October. Please share this and encourage others to join in.
