Future North West: building on RS2010

In light of the new Government’s intention to abolish the statutory basis for Regional Strategies and place decision-making on planning and housing matters solely in the hands of local authorities, work on the regional strategy (RS2010) has been reviewed.

We continue to believe that the Northwest will benefit from a shared vision and an agreed set of integrated priorities. We will therefore be developing a succinct and streamlined non-statutory, high level framework/plan for the Northwest, which builds on the RS2010 work.

In preparing this document, we will be taking full account of the key points made in response to the RS2010 Part 1 document consultation earlier this year. With this in mind, we are aiming to have a document ready for approval by early July, publish in August and invite comments over a two month period. We would then aim to finalise the document after the Comprehensive Spending Review in the Autumn of this year.

Clearly, a non-statutory framework/plan will depend on the active support and commitment of local authorities, business and other key partners to be effective and gain traction. We will therefore continue to work closely with the RS Advisory Group and 4NW committees to finalise the document.

There will be a new round of consultation from 2 August to 1 October.
