Think Tank outlines four tests for a progressive Coalition Government

24 May 2010

In a recent article, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) outlined four tests for a progressive Coalition Government:

  1. Who pays for the deficit?
The test of a more progressive Britain will be one where income, wealth and power are more fairly redistributed, where poverty rates fall and the gap between rich and poor is narrowed.

  2. Give power to the people
The localism test: do things have to be decided in Westminster or are citizens not better served by decisions being made closer to home?  It’s time for local government with real financial powers.

  3. Put climate change at the heart of policy
We need a strategy that focuses on making clean energy cheap rather than dirty energy expensive. Green industrial activism and government incentives for investment in technological innovation – a different relationship between the state and the market to achieve good green growth - are the issues that a progressive government must address.
  4. Address the challenges of an ageing population
Government needs to think about the type of work and the way of working that will suit older people and to develop a strategy that reflects their increasing presence in the labour market.
