Thinks Tank's research calls for holistic approach to tackling deprivation

30 April 2010

The Young Foundation's recently published report, The End of Regeneration?, highlights the need for a more co-ordinated approach to tackling entrenched pockets of deprivation.

The report also calls for a key line of intervention: non-conventional interventions that address underlying social issues.

An holistic, strategic and cost-effective approach should, conclude the project researchers, include alignment of all the following:

  • Social Support:Interventions to tackle underlying social issues through non-conventional means
  • Local Regeneration: Improving local environmental, economic and social conditions through physical regeneration (housing or retail led)
  • Improving Neighbourhood Services: Tackling everyday neighbourhood issues through public service provision (eg neighbourhood management, street cleaning, neighbourhood policing)
  • Structural Conditions: Reversing trends through regional and national policy - beyond the scope of local approaches to tackling deprivation
