Apprenticeships information event
9 April 2010
More than 40 people attended the Apprenticeship information lunch and networking event held at The St Thomas Centre on 15 March.
The event launched the FairTrain Group Training Association initiative for the Third Sector. FairTrain is a group of Third Sector employers and training providers that will act as a broker for employers in the sector, promoting the benefits of apprenticeships and pointing them towards providers who have signed up to FairTrain and its principles.
The Principles of FairTrain are:
• Not for Dividend Distribution
• Needs of employers to be at the heart of the organisation
• To be open and transparent about funding received and how it is used.
• To devote as much funding as possible to training and as little as possible to administration.
• A nominated person to see through any issues and complaints.
The organisations involved in FairTrain are, led by Rathbone, Skills Third Sector, NACRO, Learning Curve, London Learning Consortium, ENABLE, Prince’s Trust, St John Ambulance, Barnardo’s , Vista, VSNW and NCVO.
Fair Train is working to ensure there are suitable apprenticeship frameworks available for the Third Sector, with appropriate ‘language ‘. Apprenticeship frameworks that are under development include Business Administration, Customer Service, Youth Work, Community Development, Housing Services, Health And Social Care.
John Warham from the National Apprenticeship Service gave a detailed presentation on how apprenticeships work, the types of frameworks available and how to engage with the process.
Further Information can be found at www.apprenticeships.org.uk
Delegates had an opportunity to explore the barriers that they may face in employing apprentices and engaging with the programme, and to put forward ideas for solutions to overcome these. Ideas ranged from the provision of Tax Breaks as incentives to employers through to renaming the programme to overcome negative stereotypes.
