The Future of the North West - new collection of essays
4 March 2010
The Future of the Northwest is a new collection of essays edited by the Smith Institute, which was launched in the House of Commons recently with the endorsement of an audience of more than fifty cross-party MPs and other stakeholders.
The Future of the Northwest includes chapters from Sir Richard Leese (4NW Chair and Labour Leader of Manchester City Council), Jim Buchanan (Conservative Leader of Cumbria County Council), Flo Clucas (Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader of Liverpool City Council), Robert Hough (NWDA Chair) and Professor Michael Parkinson (Liverpool John Moores University).
The North West has been at the forefront of the regional renaissance. Over the past decade its economy has grown faster than the average, new industries have emerged, and there have been sharp reductions in unemployment and poverty. The essays in this publication highlight these successes but open up a frank debate on the difficult challenges ahead – not least achieving sustainable growth and a better quality of life for all, against the background of recession and spending cuts.
The authors make several thoughtful and practical suggestions for the way ahead, including new thinking about achieving a low-carbon economy, better transport links and more devolution. The publication provides a focus for debate both within the region and with central government and the EU.
