Our Choices' Regional Role Model Roadshow and careers advice

11 March 2010

Town Hall, Manchester

On 20 October, the National Muslim Women’s Advisory Group launched “Our choices: new careers for Muslim women”,- a website, booklet and roadshow featuring real stories of Muslim women working as a police officer, fire officer, nurse, engineer, store manager, rugby player, trade union official, journalist, artist, scientist, entrepreneur and humanitarian worker.

Two of the 12 role models are from the North West:

  • Sobia Yasin, the first uniformed officer in Greater Manchester Police to wear hijab and
  • Mez Mohmed, a district nurse working in Blackburn.

On 11 March next year, Manchester City Council will host the roadshow at the Town Hall, as part of the International Women’s Week celebrations.

The aim of the project is to raise aspirations of Muslim girls and give them confidence to pursue their own dreams and ambitions.

The 12 role model women will appear at the roadshows across the country alongside Muslim women role models from the local area. As well as getting a chance to talk to them face to face about their jobs, there will be information stands about local education, training and career opportunities to help you to plan your own future.

Although the main audience is Muslim girls, we welcome people of both genders, all ages and from all communities.

The Health White Paper Consultation

CONSULTATION FULLY BOOKED

The White Paper on Health has the potential to create one of the biggest changes to the structure and function of the NHS since its creation in 1948. Within the White Paper there are 5 consultations which are all open until early October. Although the ‘what’ in the White Paper has largely been decided, the ‘how’ is very much still being shaped.
