The coalition government has heralded a new social contract for England, with the Big Society playing a key role in developing civil society and redrawing the boundaries of the public and private sectors. In left-leaning circles the notion of ‘good society’ with a greater emphasis on fairness and social justice, is gaining ground. Furthermore, ‘our society’, offers a more bottom up, community and grassroots related approach. In all of this, there is an abiding belief that society needs to change. Facilitated by a CLES member of staff, they are small scale to encourage active participation and offer a chance to think about the future and lessons from the past.
