This conference aims to celebrate and share existing good practice of creating affordable housing and community uses in churches and on church-owned land in Cumbria and further afield.
It will explore the challenges faced in increasing these developments in faith buildings within the current context of the Government’s agenda of ‘Big Society’ and localism, policy changes and budget cuts.
Speakers to include:
► Rt Rev’d James Newcome, Bishop of Carlisle: The role of the church in rural communities
► Dr Stuart Burgess, Commission for Rural Communities: Rural housing policy - implications for rural communities
and faith organisations
► Tracy Bessant, Author of Faith in Affordable Housing: Faith in Affordable Housing - good practice and guidance from a national perspective
Workshops to include:
► The role of Community Land Trusts in ownership of community assets Section 106 agreements can work for local communities
► The church is the hub: examples of shared use of faith buildings for both community use and worship
► Communities’ views of affordable housing
► Community led planning.
The conference cost is £30 per person for funded individuals attending on behalf of their organisations. The conference is free to all unfunded individuals (church community members and community activists).
