Free training on combating poverty and social exclusion
8 September 2010 - 14 September 2010
Micah Room, 2nd Floor, Dale House, 35 Dale Street, Manchester M1 2HF
As part of the 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, Church Action on Poverty is planning to run briefing and training sessions to strengthen the skills of local people and organisations in the region. So far there has been particular interest in training on engaging and participating with disadvantaged groups, and on community organising.
Engaging disadvantaged people and groups: 8 September, 10am to 2pm
This course will guide participants in how to create an alternative space where people can meet to reflect on their reality, share experiences, learn together and plan action to have more control over what is happening in their lives and their communities. The course will give some ideas and practical tools to help participants build up skills and confidence, create opportunities for shared learning and lead to increased individual and collective voices, action and influence.
Community organising: 14 September, 1-4.30pm
Do you want to be more powerful!? Community organising is a highly effective tool for making change happen – it is what
Barack Obama used to get elected as US president. This one-day course provides an introduction to community organising, what it is and why it works.
Both events will take place in the Micah Room, 2nd Floor, Dale House, 35 Dale Street, Manchester M1 2HF.
Please note the Micah Room is not completely accessible for those with a disability. If this affects your ability to attend, please get in touch with us and we can make alternative arrangements.
EY2010 (www.2010againstpoverty.eu) is a pan-European year of activities aimed at combating poverty. In the UK, it is run by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), who have identified four key themes for the work – working-age poverty, child poverty, older people & poverty, and severe & multiple deprivation. Church Action on Poverty has been chosen by the DWP to run regional programmes for EY2010 in the North West and Yorkshire & Humber. See www.church-poverty.org.uk/projects/ey2010 for more information.
